Equitable Life (otherwise known as the Equitable Life Assurance Society) was founded in 1762 and is a life insurance company. In fact they were the first mutual life assurance company.
Whilst they are the longest surviving company of their kind they have been through some difficult periods in recent times. As such the operating assets and economic interest in much of the non profit business was sold to Halifax in 2001.
Equitable now operate as an independent company with services provided under contract by Halifax. They have reported a year in 2006 of solid progress.
